STEAM Sneakerheadz: Making Science Fresh, Fun, and Culturally Relevant

TCW-GAV helps make the Great Social Enterprise Pitch possible, giving a platform to bold ideas like STEAM Sneakerheadz.

At the 2024 Great Social Enterprise Pitch, Jakyra Simpson, known to many as Ky the Chemist, earned second place for her innovative way of blending sneaker culture with science education. Through STEAM Sneakerheadz, she’s sparking curiosity in underserved youth by showing them that science, technology, engineering, art, and math aren’t just for the classroom, they’re part of everyday life and culture.

Why She Started
Ky saw too many young people disengaged from STEAM subjects because they didn’t see themselves reflected in the way those subjects were taught. By connecting these disciplines to sneaker design, customization, and art, she’s making STEAM exciting, approachable, and relevant to her students’ interests and identities.

What They’re Building
STEAM Sneakerheadz offers interactive workshops and sneaker art kits that merge science experiments with creative design. Participants learn real scientific concepts, from chemistry to physics, while customizing sneakers they can wear with pride. The program not only builds technical skills but also fosters creativity, and problem-solving.

ASSETS’ Role
Through the ASSETS Idea Incubator, Ky developed the business tools and strategic vision needed to grow her venture. The program helped her refine her offerings, strengthen her pitch, and connect with partners who share her passion for accessible education.

Looking Ahead
Since the Pitch, Ky has launched a new website, expanded her sneaker art kit offerings, and built new partnerships to bring STEAM Sneakerheadz to more classrooms and communities. Her goal is to make the program a national model for culturally relevant STEAM education.
