The Avenue: More Than a Barbershop, A Place to Be Heard
In partnership with Cargas, ASSETS is building opportunities for entrepreneurs in Central PA, brick by brick.
For many people, a trip to the barbershop is about more than a haircut. It is a place where conversations happen, friendships are built, and community takes shape. Johnny Rivera believes that role is more important than ever.
As the owner of The Avenue by Johnny Blackbeard in Neffsville at 2611 Lititz Pike, Johnny is creating a space where men can feel comfortable showing up as they are. Alongside professional grooming services, The Avenue serves as a welcoming environment where clients can connect, find support, and access resources for their mental well-being. At a time when many people are searching for meaningful connection, Johnny is proving that community care can begin in everyday places.
Why He Started
Johnny started The Avenue with a vision of creating a stronger sense of community and belonging. He sees the barbershop as more than a place for grooming. It is a gathering place where conversations happen and people can find support.

Recognizing the challenges many men face when it comes to discussing mental health, Johnny set out to create an environment where those conversations feel natural and welcomed.
That commitment is reflected throughout The Avenue. Visitors can access a dedicated resource table within the shop that provides information and support for individuals who may be struggling with their mental health or looking for guidance. By making these resources readily available, Johnny hopes to encourage people to seek help when they need it and remind them that they do not have to navigate life’s challenges alone.
ASSETS’ Role
Johnny participated in ASSETS’ Idea Incubator, a business development program designed to help entrepreneurs strengthen and refine their ideas. The experience provided practical tools he could immediately apply to his growing business.

As he learned new strategies and approaches, he incorporated them into the development of The Avenue and strengthened the foundation needed to bring his vision to life. The program helped him sharpen both his business model and the community-centered mission that continues to guide his work today.
Looking Ahead
Johnny envisions a future where The Avenue continues to deepen its impact within the community. His long-term vision brings together men’s grooming and wellness. He hopes to grow into a larger location, bring additional barbers onto the team, and continue creating an environment where meaningful relationships can flourish. He also hopes to expand collaborations with local businesses and community organizations that share his commitment to supporting people and strengthening the community.
