Curio: A Creative Haven for Lancaster’s Artists

Lancaster is home to a thriving community of passionate entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of business with creativity, and resilience. One of these businesses is curio. Gallery & Creative Supply, a space built out of a love for the arts and a commitment to supporting local artists.
From Inspiration to Reality
Curio was founded in 2019 by Nicole Duquette and Matt Allyn Chapman, two artists with a deep connection to Lancaster’s creative community. Both Nicole and Matt hold degrees in Art from Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and have been working artists since 2008. Their experience as creators gave them firsthand knowledge of what artists need to thrive.
When the Art Store on King Street in downtown Lancaster closed in early 2019, the city lost an important resource for artists. Recognizing this gap, Nicole and Matt saw an opportunity to create a space where artists could not only find high-quality materials but also be part of a dynamic creative hub.
By April 2019, the lease was signed. By September, Curio officially opened its doors.
Building a Community
Curio is more than just a supply store. It is a creative space that brings together artists of all backgrounds. Every product, artist, and event is carefully selected with intention, ensuring that the space serves as a resource and source of inspiration for the community.
Lancaster is home to many incredible small businesses, and Curio adds to this community by fostering creativity and providing a place where artists feel supported. Nicole and Matt focus on offering high-quality materials, curating gallery shows, and hosting workshops that bring people together.
Navigating Challenges with Creativity and Resilience
Like many small businesses, Curio faced challenges early on. Just six months after opening, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal operations. The sudden shift required quick thinking and adaptation.
Nicole and Matt approached this challenge with creativity, finding new ways to engage with customers and sustain their mission. Their ability to make quick decisions and the strong support from the Lancaster community played a key role in overcoming obstacles.
The future of Curio includes growth, collaboration, and more opportunities for artists. Expansion is on the horizon, whether that means increasing physical space, offering a wider range of products, or reaching new audiences. Strengthening relationships with artists, businesses, and institutions is also a priority.
With their own artistic passions fueling their vision, Nicole and Matt are looking forward to the possibilities that 2025 will bring.
Support Local. Support Creativity.
Curio is an example of how passion, purpose, and perseverance can shape a business into something meaningful. Whether you are an artist looking for materials, a creative soul seeking inspiration, or a community member wanting to support local businesses, Curio welcomes you.
