How State Support Is Powering Small Business in Lancaster

Earlier this week, ASSETS had the honor of hosting PA State Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El for a press event highlighting the power of state investment in small businesses. The focus? The ASSETS’ Historically Disadvantaged Business Grant Program, which is delivering microgrants to underserved businesses.
At ASSETS, we were honored to celebrate thirteen Lancaster-based entrepreneurs who received $5,000 grants through this program. Each of these business owners are creating jobs, meeting community needs, and building legacies. Their stories are proof of what’s possible when intention meets investment.
Rep. Smith-Wade-El called on state leaders to keep the momentum going, urging continued support for programs and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) that directly benefit small businesses in communities like ours. “These investments foster entrepreneurship, stimulate growth, and promote hope in underfunded areas,” he said.
Small businesses face challenges that large corporations simply don’t. According to the Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED), historically disadvantaged businesses are three times more likely to be denied loans and often receive lower amounts when approved. That’s why this funding matters. It helps ensure every entrepreneur has a shot at success.
Our CEO, Jaime Arroyo, put it simply: “This is what equitable economic development looks like. Intentional investment, grassroots leadership, and shared prosperity.”
We’re grateful to our partners at the state level, including DCED, for making this program possible. And we remain committed to standing beside the entrepreneurs who are shaping small business in Central, PA.
